Arsenal predicted line-up against Newcastle United
Arsenal will welcome in-form Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tonight.
The Gunners have reached this stage of this competition by beating Crystal Palace, Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers. They haven’t lost a game in all competitions this term since the defeat versus Inter Milan back in November.
Mikel Arteta’s side lost against the Magpies when they took them on in the Premier League at St James’ Park earlier this season. Arsenal will have to play there next month in the second leg of this competition and defeating them in their backyard is always difficult so Arteta’s side will be hoping to come away with a hefty lead from this encounter.
Newcastle have won the last six consecutive games in all competitions and will be coming into this game off the back of two consecutive away victories over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Team news
Bukayo Saka has sustained a hamstring issue and is set to remain sidelined for a few weeks so he isn’t in contention to feature tonight. Moreover, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also likely unavailable for selection due to their respective injury issues.
Ethan Nwaneri picked up an injury last time out against Brighton and is expected to be ruled out for several weeks. Kai Havertz hasn’t featured since scoring against Ipswich Town last month owing to illness and it remains to be seen whether he can recover in time to be involved in this game.
Jurrien Timber was suspended last time out but is available for this game. Raheem Sterling has been out injured in recent games and could remain sidelined once again this evening.
Predicted line-up
Arteta is expected to go with a strong team for this game and David Raya should continue between the sticks. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are expected to be the centre-back partnership, while Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly could be the two fullbacks.
Therefore, Thomas Partey is likely to return to his preferred holding midfield position after starting as a right-back last time out so Jorginho could return to the bench.
Declan Rice would be alongside the Ghanaian with Martin Odegaard in the attacking midfield position. So, Mikel Merino could be among the substitutes.
Gabriel Martinelli is expected to be deployed on the right flank, while Leandro Trossard should be on the opposite side. Gabriel Jesus would lead the line for the hosts, therefore, Havertz may feature off the bench.
Expected Arsenal line-up vs Newcastle:
Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly; Partey, Rice, Odegaard; Trossard, Jesus, Martinelli
