Arsenal have received a huge boost to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Gunners hold a long-term interest in the Spaniard as they were reportedly keen on purchasing him last summer after being impressed by his displays for club and country.

In 29 La Liga starts, the 22-year-old made 16 goal contributions and helped his side qualify for the Europa League by finishing in fifth last campaign. Moreover, the forward guided Spain to win the European Championship last summer, making three goal contributions in six appearances. He even netted in the final against England.

The Athletic Bilbao star attracted a lot of attention last summer and Barcelona were one of them alongside the Gunners expressed their interest in him. However, the Basque club eventually managed to keep hold of him.

Now, reporting on TBR Football, Bailey says that the Blaugrana are Williams’s preferred destination if he were to leave San Mamés but the Catalan giants can’t afford to sign him so he is open to leaving Spain and moving to the Premier League.

Williams to Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is ‘obsessed’ with the Spaniard and the Gunners have money available in January to sign him by triggering his £48m release clause.

Williams is considering moving to the Premier League before returning to Spain and fulfilling his dream of playing for Barcelona. Therefore, this is a huge boost for the North London club to sign him. However, purchasing him won’t be straightforward as Liverpool and Manchester City are also keen on securing his service.

The Gunners’ attackers have been inconsistent thus far this season. Bukayo Saka is their only forward – who has delivered consistently this campaign.

However, he is set to remain sidelined over the coming weeks after sustaining a hamstring issue. So, signing a new winger in January could be the right decision to help Mikel Arteta mount a title charge in the second half of this season.

Williams prefers to play in the left flank but is comfortable on the opposite side. The 23-year-old is deemed one of the hottest prospects in world football so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him.
