Arsenal closing in on signing of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi
Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of securing the signing of Real Sociedad and Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi, according to transfer expert Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail.
The 25-year-old midfielder has attracted attention from some of Europe’s top clubs and has long been a target for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is said to be a big admirer of Zubimendi.
The Gunners currently have Thomas Partey and Jorginho in their midfield ranks, but with both players nearing the end of their contracts, Arsenal are keen to rejuvenate their squad. Strengthening the midfield is seen as crucial in their quest to compete for major trophies and it appears they’ve set their sights on Zubimendi.
Arsenal close-in on Zubimendi
As per Mokbel, Arsenal are set to trigger Martin Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause, with the deal expected to go through at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Journalist Ben Jacobs is reporting similar information, but he adds that Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with Zubimendi ahead of his proposed move to North London in the summer.
Regarded as one of the top midfielders in Europe, Zubimendi was previously linked with a move to Liverpool at the start of the season but chose to remain with Real Sociedad. However, the move to Arsenal appears to be in advanced stages, with Mikel Arteta said to be playing a crucial role in convincing the midfielder to move to the Emirates Stadium.
Earlier this season, Arsenal secured the signing of Zubimendi’s former teammate and fellow Spaniard Mikel Merino. The presence of Merino at the club is expected to provide Zubimendi with a sense of familiarity and a smooth transition to life in North London.
A graduate of Real Sociedad’s academy, Zubimendi has been a key figure for the Basque club, making 210 appearances since breaking into the first team in 2019. The Spanish international has also earned 15 caps for his country, playing an integral role in Spain’s triumphant Euro campaign, including the final where they emerged victorious.
Arsenal fans will be eagerly awaiting the official confirmation of Zubimendi’s arrival, as the midfielder promises to bring quality, composure, and experience to the heart of the Gunners’ midfield.
