Arsenal interested in signing Wolves star Matheus Cunha
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
After narrowly missing out on winning the Premier League title last term, it was widely suggested that the Gunners need a new striker to reinforce the frontline to finally win the league.
However, Mikel Arteta ignored that and opted to add depth to other areas of the squad last summer. Mikel Merino was hired from Real Sociedad to bolster the engine room, while Riccardo Calafiori joined from Bologna to strengthen the defence.
Now, the North London club have had a topsy-turvy campaign thus far this season. They are currently second in the table with 44 points from 22 games, sitting six points behind the league leaders Liverpool – who have a game in hand.
Following Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka’s injury absence, Arsenal have found themselves thin in numbers in their attacking department and Arteta has hinted that new signings may come before the deadline.
Cunha to Arsenal
Now, writing on X, Romano says that the Emirates club have identified Cunha as a serious option to reinforce the attack and could make a concrete approach to hire him.
However, Wolves are keen on keeping hold of him by tying him down to a new deal and have already had a verbal agreement with the player to extend his contract. But, the final details still need to be clarified before finalising the deal.
Romano wrote:
“Matheus Cunha situation, still one to be monitored as Wolves insist to get new deal signed. After verbal agreement two weeks ago, there are still final details to clarify in order to sign. Arsenal have had Cunha on their list for months, more clubs are also attentive.”
Wolves are currently in the relegation scrap and if they eventually fail to secure their PL status next season then they would be forced to sell him in a cut-price deal next summer.
Cunha – valued at around £42m by Transfermarkt – is a left-sided attacker by traits but is also comfortable in the centre-forward position. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are the two options Arteta currently has to deploy on the LW position.
However, neither of them has managed to showcase consistency, therefore, upgrading this position would be the right decision and the Brazilian would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him.
