Arsenal prioritising signing Newcastle star Alexander Isak
Arsenal are reportedly prioritising signing Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, as per transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
After being pipped to the post by Manchester City in the Premier League title race last term, it was thought that the Gunners would attempt to hire a new striker last summer.
They were linked with a host of options in the last transfer window with Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko being among them. However, Mikel Arteta eventually opted not to sign a new number nine before the deadline.
However, following Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending knee injury, it has been reported that the North London club want to sign a new striker to replace the Brazilian.
Speaking on GiveMeSport, Romano says that after exploring the market, Arsenal have placed Isak at the ‘top of the list’.
Isak to Arsenal
Alongside the Swedish international, Sesko of Leipzig is also high on Arteta’s wish-list. But, the Gunners will eventually hire only one of them. Although Arsenal need a new striker in this winter window to mount a title charge in the second half of this season, it is likely they will wait until next summer to sign either of them.
Romano said:
“These two players [Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko] remain top of the list for the summer for Arsenal, of course [they would only sign] one of them. We will see what Arsenal will decide to do.
“And now could be an opportunity, so they are exploring the market. They are exploring opportunities, and we will try to find out as soon as possible who is the player they want to bring in.”
The Newcastle star enjoyed a productive campaign last term, making 23 goal contributions in the Premier League. Now, he has continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess this season, scoring 15 goals and registering five assists in 20 league appearances.
Isak is a Premier League proven player so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, he is valued at around £63m by Transfermarkt and still has three and a half years left in his current contract. Therefore, the Magpies are likely to demand a huge fee to let him leave this year.
