Arsenal submit bid to sign Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins
Arsenal have reportedly submitted an official proposal to sign Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Following Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka’s recent injuries, Mikel Arteta hinted that they are evaluating options to sign a new centre-forward before the deadline.
Now, it seems the Gunners have identified Watkins as the primary target to reinforce the attack. Writing on X, Romano says that Arsenal have submitted a £60m bid to sign the Villa star but Unai Emery’s side have turned down the offer.
Aston Villa aren’t happy with the North London club’s approach as they made the move just before a crucial Champions League fixture.
Romano wrote:
“Aston Villa have rejected today an official bid from Arsenal for Ollie Watkins. Proposal around £60m turned down as Villa are not happy with the timing of the bid, ahead of crucial UCL game for the club.”
Watkins to Arsenal
The Villans are reportedly in advanced talks with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr to sell Jhon Duran and it is highly unlikely that they will sanction both of their star striker’s departure late in this window.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the North London club return with an improved proposal for Watkins or shift their focus to other targets. They have also been linked with other names in recent days with Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres being among them.
The 29-year-old was excellent in the Premier League last campaign, scoring 19 goals and registering 13 assists in 37 appearances. He had a slow start to this season but has been in fine form recently, making 15 goal contributions in the English top-flight thus far this term.
Watkins is a Premier League proven striker so he shouldn’t take much time to settle down in his new surroundings if he moves to the Emirates Stadium before the deadline.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arteta’s side eventually manage to secure his service in this window to reinforce the attacking department.
Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League table with 47 points from 23 games, sitting six points behind the table topper Liverpool – who have a game in hand. Now, the Gunners will face off against Manchester City in the league this weekend.
