Arsenal plot swoop to sign Joao Victor de Souza

By on February 4, 2025

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Santos youngster Joao Victor de Souza, as per Caught Offside.

Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly have been the preferred left-back option for Mikel Arteta this season. The former joined the club from Bologna last summer, while the latter came through the club’s youth system.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was the Gunners’ first-choice left-back option but has struggled in recent times. Jakub Kiwior is another name who played in this position but has been linked with a move away from the club.

Kieran Tierney is still at the club and has made a few appearances this season. But, he is set to leave ahead of next season as a free agent.

Tierney, Zinchenko and Kiwior are all likely to leave next summer. Despite that, Arsenal have enough depth in their left-back position but Calafiori has found it difficult to stay fit this season.

De Souza to Arsenal

Therefore, perhaps, Arteta wants a new left-sided defender. Caught Offside claim that Arsenal have expressed their interest in De Souza and could make a concrete approach to secure his service.

The 18-year-old is keen on moving to Europe and showcasing his qualities at the highest level. Therefore, he would be ready to move to the Emirates Stadium should he receive an offer.

However, Chelsea are also in this race and they want to sign him and send him on loan to sister club Strasburg to continue his development but the player isn’t impressed by this proposal.

Barcelona are also interested in him but they are unlikely to be able to get the deal done and Arsenal are willing to win this race by taking advantage of these situations.

The Brazilian is an attack-minded left-back and is also comfortable in the more advanced role. He is a talented player and is considered the ‘new Marcelo’, therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they purchase him.

However, it is highly unlikely that he will be able to make an impact for Arsenal’s first-team straightaway if he joins the club next summer. So, the North Londoners will have to be patient with him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually opt to secure his service to reinforce the left side of defence next summer.
