Arsenal eye swoop to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui

By on February 11, 2025

Arsenal are reportedly planning to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, the Gunners will now have to win the Premier League or the Champions League to avoid finishing the campaign trophyless.

They are second in the league with 50 points from 24 games, sitting six points behind the league leaders Liverpool – who have a game in hand. So, the Reds are currently the favourite to lift the title this campaign.

It has widely been suggested that the North London club need a new prolific goal-scorer to finally win the Premier League title. It was thought that they would look to hire one in the summer window or in January but Mikel Arteta’s side eventually opted not to do that.

Now, Fichajes state that Arsenal are planning to purchase a new centre-forward ahead of next season and have earmarked Retegui as an ‘ideal’ option having been impressed by his displays this season.

Retegui to Arsenal

The forward is now the leading goal-scorer in Serie A this season with 20 goals and he even netted four goals against Hellas Verona in the league away from home last weekend. The 25-year-old has also made three assists in 22 league appearances.

Retegui joined La Dea from Genoa last summer so they aren’t in any rush to sell him just yet but they could change their stance should they receive an offer of at least £42m.

However, purchasing the Italian international won’t be straightforward for the North London club as Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in luring him away from Gewiss Stadium.

Arsenal need an experienced striker to achieve their lofty ambitions. Retegui is a talented player and could become a top-class forward in future.

However, he hasn’t showcased his qualities consistently enough to prove that he would be the right option for the North London club to strengthen the striker department. So, they could be better off exploring other options.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce the attacking department.
