Arsenal ‘in contact’ to sign Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz

By on February 18, 2025

Arsenal are reportedly ‘in contact’ over a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Gunners have Martin Odegaard as the first-choice attacking midfielder option. Ethan Nwaneri can provide cover in this position if needed but it appears Mikel Arteta is willing to add more depth in this position next summer.

On TBR Football, Bailey says that Arsenal hold a long-term interest in Wirtz and have been ‘in contact’ with the player’s representatives to secure his service.

The German could leave Leverkusen next summer if Xabi Alonso moves away with Real Madrid willing to appoint him as the new manager to succeed Carlo Ancelotti.

Wirtz is valued at around £87m and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of moving to the Premier League so the Gunners might be able to persuade him to join ahead of next season.

However, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have been pushing to sign him, while Liverpool and Manchester City are also keen on purchasing him. Therefore, Arsenal will have to beat tough competition to get the deal done.

Wirtz has been in stellar form in recent times, he netted 18 goals and registered 20 assists in all competitions last term. Moreover, he guided Leverkusen to win their first-ever Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal.

Now, he has continued to display impressive performances this season, making 27 goal contributions in 35 appearances in all competitions. Following his recent eye-catching displays for Leverkusen, he has been a key player for Germany.

Arsenal have established themselves as the Premier League title challengers but have been struggling to take the next step and finally win the league.

Players like Wirtz would definitely help achieve their lofty ambitions. But, Arsenal desperately need a new prolific goalscorer, therefore, they would be better off saving the money to sign one next summer.

Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure the German’s signature in the upcoming transfer window.

Meanwhile, following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Leicester City, Arteta’s side will face off against West Ham United in the Premier League next weekend.
