Arsenal have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, as the Magpies have no intention of selling him, according to reports from The Sun.

The Gunners have long been linked with a move for the Swedish international, with top journalists, including Fabrizio Romano , confirming that Arsenal have him high on their list of attacking targets.

Mikel Arteta’s side are desperate for attacking reinforcements after failing to make any signings in the winter transfer window.

With the summer window fast approaching, Arsenal are preparing to aggressively enter the market in search of a top-class striker.

Isak has been in sensational form this season, registering 17 league goals for Newcastle. This follows an impressive 2023/24 Premier League campaign, where he netted 21 times for the Magpies.

The 25-year-old striker is under contract at St. James’ Park until 2028, further strengthening Newcastle’s stance on keeping him.

Arsenal dealt huge blow in Isak’s pursuit

Isak joined the club for a record £63 million, including add-ons, and has proven to be a key player under Eddie Howe.

According to The Sun, Arsenal would need to pay almost double Newcastle’s asking price of £82.9 million to land the striker.

If a deal were to go through at such a price, Isak would become the second most expensive striker in football history, behind Neymar’s record move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Quite a number of top clubs have also been linked to the former Real Sociedad star, with Liverpool and Chelsea reportedly interested in signing him.

Newcastle are expected to attract a host of suitors across Europe in the summer transfer window and will need to decide whether to stand firm or demand a massive fee for their star striker.

Arsenal now face a major decision—whether to push for Isak or turn their attention to alternative targets.

Other names on their shortlist include RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško and Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike who has been recently linked to a move to the Gunners.

Meanwhile, Isak is set to lead Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, a match that could see the Magpies lift their first major trophy in 70 years.
