Arsenal ‘on the trail’ of Wolves star Matheus Cunha
Arsenal are reportedly ‘on the trail’ of Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Gunners mounted the Premier League title charge in the last two seasons and came very close to overcoming the two decades of title drought. However, they were pipped to the post by eventual champions Manchester City on both occasions.
Therefore, Mikel Arteta said ahead of this season that he is desperate to win the league finally this season. But, it appears the North London club won’t be able to achieve that feat this campaign.
Following Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham United and Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City last weekend, the Reds have now extended their lead at the top of the league by 11 points.
Considering Arsenal are already out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, they may have to end the season empty-handed once again. It is believed that their downfall this term has largely been due to injury problems.
Cunha to Arsenal
Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have sustained serious injuries so their season is over, meaning Arteta has been left without a specialist centre forward. Moreover, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka have also had injury problems at the moment.
Now, Fichajes state that Arsenal are willing to strengthen the attack ahead of next season and have been ‘on the trail’ of Cunha having been impressed by his performances in the Premier League this season.
They are even ‘seriously considering’ triggering his £62m release clause. However, purchasing him won’t be easy as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also keen on hiring him with Spurs planning to trigger his release clause.
Cunha has been one of the brightest stars in Wolves’ difficult season this term, scoring 13 goals and notching up four assists in 25 Premier League appearances.
The Brazilian would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him as he is comfortable playing in the striker position as well as in the left flank.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen the attacking department.
