Arsenal target £50m Kounde to boost defensive options

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, according to reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes

The Gunners have had a respectable Premier League campaign this season and currently sit in second place.

However, with the title seemingly out of reach for another campaign, Arsenal are already looking ahead to next season.

League leaders Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, are 15 points clear of Arsenal, though the Gunners have a game in hand.

The two sides are also set to face off in May. Despite the slim mathematical chance, it would take an extraordinary collapse from Liverpool to let Arsenal back into the title race.

If Arsenal finish second as expected, it would mark their third consecutive season as Premier League runners-up.

They had been tipped to mount a serious title challenge after coming close twice against Manchester City, but Liverpool’s remarkable form this season has thrown a wrench into those plans.

Injury setbacks and defensive needs

One of the main challenges for Arteta this season has been injuries to key attacking players at crucial moments. Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli have all missed matches recently, leaving Arsenal short of firepower.
