Arsenal eye Cunha as Berta targets summer signings
Arsenal are preparing to appoint Andrea Berta as their new sporting director, according to reports from multiple sources.
The former Atletico Madrid man is expected to get straight to work, identifying potential signings and planning recruitments ahead of a busy summer transfer window for the Gunners.
Strengthening the attack will be a priority, as Mikel Arteta’s side have struggled to find the back of the net at times this season.
Several forward options have already been identified, with Matheus Cunha emerging as a key target.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Berta is keen to activate the Brazilian’s release clause, positioning Arsenal as one of the frontrunners for his signature.
Cunha has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs and Arsenal is no exception.
The London side expressed interest in the versatile attacker during the winter transfer window, but no formal offer materialized.
However, his contract with Wolves reportedly contains a release clause that could be triggered in the summer, leaving the door open for a potential move.
The Wolves striker has enjoyed a prolific season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions under Vitor Pereira’s guidance.
Following his impressive form, the 25-year-old penned a new four-year contract in early February, setting his summer valuation at around £62.5 million.
Berta looking to sign Cunha
Berta’s connection to Cunha dates back to their time at Atletico Madrid, where the transfer chief facilitated Cunha’s move from Hertha Berlin in 2021 to support Diego Simeone’s attacking options.
This previous relationship could prove advantageous for Arsenal as they look to secure his services.
Arteta’s goal is to enhance his frontline with a dynamic and adaptable striker who fits his fluid attacking philosophy.
While Cunha does not embody the traditional number nine, his ability to function as a false nine and adapt to multiple offensive roles makes him an appealing candidate for the Spanish coach.
Though several other clubs are reportedly monitoring Cunha’s situation, Berta’s appointment could significantly influence the negotiations.
His familiarity with the player and his proven success in major transfer deals might give Arsenal the edge in the race to sign the Brazilian forward.
