Arsenal are reportedly ‘in contact’ over a deal to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, as per German football expert Christian Falk.

The Gunners expressed their interest in signing the 22-year-old following his eye-catching displays last term. He helped the Basque club win the Copa del Rey and even guided Spain to win the European Championship last summer.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side eventually opted not to formalise their interest so a deal didn’t come to fruition. Williams started this season slowly but has been in excellent form in recent weeks.

He has been guiding Athletic Bilbao to mount a top-four charge and has also helped them reach the quarterfinal of the Europa League. In La Liga and the Europa League, he has made 15 goal contributions this term.

Now, writing on X, Falk reports that despite failing to hire him last time around, Arsenal haven’t given up on their hopes of signing him. But, purchasing the Spaniard won’t be straightforward for the Gunners as Bayern Munich have also registered their interest in him.

Williams to Arsenal

So, Arsenal have already held talks with the player’s representatives to beat the Bavarian club in this race. Williams has a release clause worth around £50m with his existing deal set to run until 2027.

The 22-year-old is comfortable playing on either flank but likes to be deployed on the left side. Having displayed his qualities for Ernesto Valverde’s side in recent times, the youngster is currently deemed one of the hottest prospects in La Liga.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli are the two left winger Arsenal currently have but both have been average this term. Therefore, upgrading this position would be the right decision.

Williams is a talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in the Premier League. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen the attacking department.

Meanwhile, after overcoming PSV Eindhoven’s challenge in the Champions League last-16, Arsenal will take on Real Madrid in the quarter-final next month.
