Andrea Berta could look to sign Pablo Barrios at Arsenal
Arsenal’s new incoming sporting director Andrea Berta could reportedly lure Atletico Madrid star Pablo Barrios to the Emirates Stadium, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
Following a successful time with Los Rojiblancos over the last few years, the Italian is reportedly set to become the new sporting director of Arsenal.
He will oversee the North London club’s business in the upcoming transfer window. It will be a crucial few months for Arsenal as they will be looking to assemble a squad that can finally win the Premier League title.
It has widely been reported that the Gunners are prioritising signing a new prolific striker with Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
Moreover, Mikel Arteta’s side are looking to revamp the midfield department as Thomas Partey and Jorginho have entered the final few months of their respective contracts and are looking likely to leave at the end of this season.
Barrios to Arsenal
Now, reporting on TBR Football, Bailey says that having seen Barrios ranking through Atletico Madrid’s youth system, the 53-year-old is a huge admirer of him. Therefore, the Italian could attempt to make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window to bolster the midfield.
The 21-year-old has a contract until 2028 with Los Rojiblancos and has a £84m release clause. But, Arsenal won’t make a move for him unless Diego Simeone’s side lower their valuation.
Arsenal are also interested in signing Martin Zubimendi and are hoping to get the deal done quickly to avoid a bidding war as he has been on the radar of several other big European clubs as well.
Barrios usually plays in a double midfield pivot under Simeone but can also play as a lone deep-lying playmaker. He has established himself as a key player in the Argentinian boss’ starting eleven this season.
The youngster is technically gifted and possesses the necessary qualities to play in Arteta’s possession-based system. Moreover, he is quick across the ground, therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him.
