Arsenal eye move to sign Freiburg star Noah Atubolu

By on March 20, 2025

Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Freiburg star Noah Atubolu, as per transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.

Following Aaron Ramsdale’s departure last summer, the Gunners prioritised purchasing Joan García from Espanyol as the backup option to David Raya. They even submitted a formal proposal to hire him but a deal didn’t come to fruition.

In the end, Mikel Arteta’s side opted to sign Neto from AFC Bournemouth but the Brazilian has joined on a loan deal and is expected to return to the Cherries at the end of this season.

Now, on TBR Football, Bailey says that Arsenal are planning to add depth in the goalkeeper position once again this summer and García is still their primary target.

However, purchasing him won’t be easy as he has attracted the attention of several big European clubs having displayed impressive performances in La Liga this season.

Atubolu to Arsenal

Therefore, Arsenal have earmarked Atubolu as a potential alternative option. They have been monitoring the 22-year-old’s performances closely this season before making a potential swoop.

The German, standing at 6ft 3in tall, has been guiding Freiburg to mount a top-four charge in the Bundesliga this term, sitting only three points behind fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.

Atubolu has been in excellent form this season, keeping 10 clean sheets with a 71% saving rate in 23 Bundesliga appearances. He has faced two penalties this season and has saved both but has made three errors that have led to goals.

Apart from his shot-stopping abilities, he can play out from the back and good in the air. So, he possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s system.

It appears the Gunners boss wants to sign a younger goalkeeper to support Raya and Atubolu might be a shrewd acquisition if the North London club purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen the goalkeeping department.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Arteta’s side are planning to hire a new striker and midfielder along with a new goalkeeper. So, it remains to be seen how many new acquisitions they make this summer to bolster the squad.
