Arsenal are reportedly ahead of Bayern Munich in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams.

The Gunners are keen to strengthen their attack in the summer after a challenging 2024/25 campaign marked by injuries and a lack of goals.

Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit second in the Premier League table, 12 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The gap in goals is also significant, with Arsenal netting 53 compared to Liverpool’s 69.

This difference of 16 goals highlights the need for more firepower ahead of next season and bringing in Nico Williams could be the answer to Arsenal’s attacking struggles.

The 21-year-old winger has been on the club’s radar for a while. Adding him to the squad would give Arsenal a new dimension in attack.

Bayern Struggle to Compete for Williams

Arsenal may face competition from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for Williams’ signature.

However, the German club may need to sell players before making a move for the Spaniard. This puts Arsenal in a strong position to secure Williams’ signature.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, journalist Christian Falk revealed the situation. He stated:

“It’s not true that Bayern Munich are in the lead for Nico Williams. I think, at the moment, Williams is closer to a move to Arsenal than Bayern Munich, as the Bundesliga club can’t be as concrete as they would like as things currently stand.”

Bayern’s head of sport, Max Eberl, must sell players to fund a move. Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry are on the for-sale list.

Coman has been linked to Tottenham, Newcastle, and clubs in Saudi Arabia. However, Gnabry has yet to attract interest from potential buyers.

“Williams is still very high on the list at Bayern, but Max Eberl, head of sport, has to sell players first. They want to sell Kingsley Coman (linked to Tottenham, Newcastle and Saudi Arabia). If they can manage this, they could take the money and use it to help sign Williams.

“Serge Gnabry is also on the for-sale list, but no club is interested at the moment. So, Bayern have to wait and see if they can make a sale for Coman.”

Williams has shown his quality on the international stage too. He scored the opener for Spain in their 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. His brilliant play also led to Mikel Merino’s equaliser after the Dutch took the lead.

Signing Williams would be a positive step for Arsenal. Their forward line has lacked consistency this season.

Injuries to Gabriel Jesus and the inconsistency of Kai Havertz have been costly. Adding Williams could provide the spark they need in the final third.

If Bayern fail to offload Coman or Gnabry, Arsenal may have a clear path to sign their long-term target. And with a release clause of around £48m Williams also wouldn’t break the bank.

The Gunners will hope to wrap up the deal before their European rivals can get their finances in order.
