Arsenal eye surprise swoop to sign Bilal El Khannouss
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a surprise swoop to sign Leicester City star Bilal El Khannouss, as per Africa Foot.
After joining the Foxes from Belgian side Genk last summer, the 20-year-old has established himself as a key player in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s starting eleven this season.
However, he has endured a difficult start in the Premier League, making only three goal contributions in 24 league appearances. Moreover, it appears he is unlikely to be able to help his side survive relegation this season. Leicester are currently nine points behind safety with as many games remaining this season.
Now, Africa Foot state that if Leicester eventually go down then El Khannouss will leave this summer and Arsenal have started showing a keen interest in signing him despite his recent underwhelming displays.
The Moroccan is valued at around £25m by Transfermarkt and still has three years left in his current contract. Therefore, Leicester could demand a sizable amount of money to let him leave.
The report say the Gunners aren’t the only club interested in him as Leipzig and Lazio are also plotting a swoop for him.
El Khannouss to Arsenal
El Khannouss is an attacking midfielder by trait but can also provide cover out wide. He is an old-fashioned technically gifted creative midfielder and isn’t a dynamic hard-working player.
Despite his recent struggles in the Premier League, he has showcased glimpses of his potential this season as he has netted against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in two different competitions.
El Khannouss is still just 20 and might be able to play better in a stronger team. Arsenal need a new creative midfielder to support Martin Odegaard as they lack depth in this position.
Therefore, the African could be a useful acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, he isn’t an elite-level player and the North London club need top-class options to win the Premier League title finally.
So, Arsenal would be better off exploring other options to strengthen the squad. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Mikel Arteta’s side eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
