Arsenal join Liverpool in race to sign Ajax star Jorrel Hato
Arsenal have reportedly joined Liverpool in the race to sign Ajax Amsterdam youngster Jorrel Hato, as per TEAMtalk.
The Gunners decided to reinforce the left-back position by signing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna last summer. However, he has struggled with fitness problems this season. After returning from his injury, he has sustained a fresh problem out on international duty with Italy.
Therefore, Myles Lewis-Skelly has been playing regularly this season. He has been impressive thus far and as a result, he was selected to play for England in this March international break. The youngster even scored on his debut against Albania.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal are planning to add depth to the left-back position and have registered their interest in signing Hato. The North London club have sent scouts to watch him in action closely this season.
Hato to Arsenal
However, Liverpool have been showing an interest in him as a potential long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk. Apart from the Gunners and the Reds, Real Madrid, Chelsea and AC Milan are also considering making a move for him.
Ajax initially wanted around £25m for the Dutchman but amid growing interest in him, they have now decided to increase the valuation and want up to £42m to let him leave.
Hato is a left-footed versatile defender as he can play in the left-back position as well as the centre-back role. He is comfortable playing out from the back and is efficient in defensive contributions.
The Gunners previously expressed their interest in signing Hato last summer after being impressed by his performances last season. But, they didn’t formalise their interest and instead, they decided to go for Calafiori.
The 19-year-old has been in stellar form in Eredivisie this season, scoring twice and registering six assists in 23 appearances. Moreover, he has kept nine clean sheets.
The youngster is a talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in Arteta’s system. Therefore, he would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure the Netherlands international’s service by beating other European giants in this race.
