Arsenal will ‘definitely’ sign Real Sociedad star Zubimendi
Arsenal are reportedly set to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, as per Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth.
The Spaniard has continued to be linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years. Liverpool expressed a firm interest in signing him last summer to bolster the engine room but, the 26-year-old eventually rejected a move to Anfield to stay at his boyhood club.
Now, the midfielder has once again been the subject of speculation in recent months and this time, Arsenal are willing to secure his services to revamp the middle of the park.
Thomas Partey and Jorginho have entered the final few months of their respective contracts and aren’t close to signing an extension yet. Therefore, it is highly likely that the duo will leave as free agents this summer.
Now, on the Transfer Talk, Sheth says that Zubimendi was close to joining Liverpool last summer and a deal was almost agreed upon before the player opted to turn it down.
Zubimendi to Arsenal
Perhaps, Arsenal swooped in and persuaded the Spaniard not to join Liverpool last year as they want him this summer. Moreover, Mikel Arteta knows the player ‘really well’ so Zubimendi opted to wait and is now ‘definitely’ moving to the Emirates Stadium.
Sheth said:
“I’d say that the Zubimendi one is almost definitely going to happen to Arsenal. He looked all set to go to Liverpool. It looked like it was a done deal. The deal was agreed.
“It was him who changed his mind in the last minute. And you just wonder whether Arsenal had come in and said, look, we can’t bring you in now, we desperately want you. Mikel Arteta knows him really well. And maybe he just thought, I’ll just bide my time for the time being. I actually want to go to Arsenal. Maybe he thought that.”
The midfielder reportedly has a £50m release clause in his current contract with his existing deal set to run until 2027.
After ranking through La Real’s youth system, Zubimendi has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga. He has even been playing regularly for Spain amid Rodrigo Hernandez’s injury absence.
He is a technically gifted player and possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s system. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they eventually manage to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window.
