Arsenal are reportedly increasingly keen on signing Sporting CP superstar Viktor Gyokeres, as per transfer expert David Ornstein.

Gabriel Jesus was initially the Gunners’ first-choice centre-forward since joining from Manchester City back in 2022. However, his injury problems and inconsistency forced Mikel Arteta to sign Kai Havertz from Chelsea ahead of last season to bolster the frontline.

Following a slow start to his life at the Emirates Stadium, he ended the campaign promisingly last term, making 21 goal contributions in all competitions. But, he had an average campaign this term before sustaining a serious injury.

On the other hand, Jesus’s season is also done having sustained a long-term knee injury. Therefore, Arteta has been left without a specialist striker at the moment and Mikel Merino has been playing as auxiliary centre-forward.

It has widely been reported that the North London club want to upgrade the No.9 position by hiring a new prolific goalscorer this summer.

Gyokeres to Arsenal

On The Athletic, Ornstein says that Arteta is a huge fan of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak and wants to hire him this summer. However, the Magpies have no intention of letting their star man leave and are seeking a mammoth fee to sell him.

Arsenal are also interested in Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig and have already done the groundwork for him. But, they may not opt to make a formal proposal to secure his service.

The Emirates club’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, has been a ‘firm admirer’ of Gyokeres and Arsenal are now developing a ‘strong interest’ in signing him. The player is likely to be one of the names on Arsenal’s wishlist and he would be a more attainable option than Isak.

It has been reported that Gyokeres has an agreement with Sporting to leave Jose Alvalade Stadium this summer. He has a release clause worth around £84m but is likely to be available for a fee of just around £50m.

The 26-year-old has been in stellar goal-scoring form for club and country in recent years and is currently in the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he might be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal to reinforce the frontline if they eventually purchase him.
