Arsenal target Rafael Leao to boost attack
Arsenal are in the market for attacking reinforcements as new sporting director Andrea Berta begins his work in London.
The Gunners want a left winger to add depth and challenge Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard for a starting spot.
Spanish winger Nico Williams is one of the top names on their list and talks have taken place in recent weeks.
However, Arsenal are exploring other options, including Wolverhampton’s Matheus Cunha.
According to a report from TBR, AC Milan star Rafael Leao is now being considered as well.
Leao could be a Key addition For Arteta
The Gunners want a right-footed player on the left wing, similar to the quality they already have on the right.
Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri offer strong cover on the right side of Arsenal’s front three.
Now the club want the same balance on the left and see Leao as a perfect fit.
The Portuguese international is open to leaving AC Milan at the end of the season, as per the report.
However, Arsenal face competition as Chelsea are also interested in the 25-year-old and have been long-term admirers of the winger.
Leao is valued at £64 million (transfermarkt) and won the Serie A Player of the Year award in 2021–22.
He can play on the left wing but is also comfortable as a centre forward or second striker. This makes him a flexible option that would suit Mikel Arteta’s system.
Despite Milan’s poor form this season, Leao has recorded 10 goals and 9 assists in all competitions.
The Rossoneri are currently ninth in the Serie A table and look set to miss out on Champions League football.
A move to the Emirates Stadium could appeal to Leao, with Arsenal expected to qualify for Europe’s top competition.
The chance to fight for major honours might also tempt him to make the switch.
With Berta now leading the club’s transfer plans, Arsenal are set to move decisively this summer.
