Arsenal battling with Man Utd to sign Matheus Cunha

By on April 9, 2025

Arsenal are reportedly in a battle with Manchester United over a deal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers ace Matheus Cunha, as per talkSPORT.

The 25-year-old has been a subject of attention for several big Premier League clubs having displayed impressive performances in the English top flight in recent campaigns.

After making 22 goal contributions in all competitions last term, he has continued his goal-scoring prowess this season, netting 15 times and registering four assists in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Now, talkSPORT state that Arsenal are planning to strengthen the centre-forward department and the flanks this summer and have identified Cunha as a potential target.

They have been keeping a close eye on his development before making a potential swoop. However, Mikel Arteta’s side want Viktor Gyokeres as the primary option to strengthen the striker position and Nico Williams for the wide-forward area. Therefore, Cunha is lower than the duo in the Spanish boss’ wishlist.

Cunha to Arsenal

The Brazilian’s agent will travel to England to hold talks with his potential suitors and may make contact with the Gunners. The player has a £62.5m release clause in his contract, which can be triggered this summer.

Apart from the North London club, Nottingham Forest and Man Utd are also interested in him, while the Red Devils have already held talks with the player’s representatives over this deal.

Cunha is a versatile forward as he is comfortable playing out wide and in the centre-forward position. However, his best position is the second striker role. The forward is quick, strong, has an eye for scoring goals from distance and can shoot with both of his feet.

Arsenal usually play with a 4-3-3 formation and don’t use two centre-forwards. Therefore, although the South American has proven his worth in the Premier League in recent years, he might not be the best option for Arsenal to bolster the frontline. Moreover, he is a hot-headed person and has the tendency to lose his composure.

Therefore, the Emirates club might be better off exploring other options to strengthen the attacking department. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually decide to lure him away from Molineux Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
