Arsenal plot swoop to sign Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Swedish international has been a subject of speculation in recent transfer windows after displaying his goal-scoring prowess with the Lions.
Having made 58 goal contributions last term, he was heavily linked with a move away from Jose Alvalade Stadium last summer. However, Sporting eventually opted to keep hold of him.
This season, he has continued to showcase outstanding performances, scoring 44 goals and registering 11 assists in 45 appearances.
Following that, he has come on the radar of several big clubs around Europe. On GiveMeSport, Romano says that the Portuguese giants are prepared to let their star man leave during the off-season.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
The player has a £86m release clause in his current contract but Sporting won’t ask that much and are ready to accept a fee of around £56m with his existing contract set to run until 2028.
Arsenal are prioritising signing a new striker in the upcoming window and their new sporting director Andrea Berta has been exploring options in the market. Newcastle United star Alexander Isak is their dream target, however, the Magpies won’t let him leave so the Gunners are planning to hire Gyokeres.
Berta is a huge admirer of the forward and attempted to hire him at Atletico Madrid last summer but eventually couldn’t manage to find an agreement with the Lions.
Gyokeres’s agent has travelled to England this month to hold talks with potential suitors and Arsenal may have contacted him over this deal. Manchester United are also in this race but they have found themselves in financial difficulties so brokering this deal might not be possible.
So, they have lined up Liam Delap of Ipswich Town as a potential cheaper alternative option. He could be available for £30m should The Tractor Boys endure relegation.
Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are the two strikers Arsenal currently have but they aren’t natural goal-scorers. Arsenal need a prolific centre-forward to become the Premier League champions and Gyokeres might be an excellent acquisition if they eventually manage to get the deal done.
