This Arsenal Player Is Set To Start Against Aston Villa – Reports
Arsene Wenger has decided to start Wojciech Szczesny ahead of David Ospina in today’s FA Cup final against Aston Villa, according to the Mirror.
Szczesny was axed as Arsenal’s No.1 after a horror show during our 2-0 loss at Southampton on New Year’s Day while he was also reportedly fined for smoking in the showers after the game at St Mary’s.
Ospina has been Wenger’s preferred option in the league and Champions League during the second half of the season, with Szczesny restricted to playing in the FA Cup games.
There was talk that the boss may play his first choice keeper tonight but the Mirror are one of several newspapers who claim that he’s decided to stick to his principles, and play Szczesny against Aston Villa.
I think it’s the right decision if Wenger has gone with Szczesny. The Polish international was left out of last year’s final in favour of No.2 Lukasz Fabianski, so it would be harsh to deny him the chance to play this time around.
Szczesny admitted to reporters that he’s keen to play tonight as he didn’t really feel he earned his medal last year.
“I did get a medal last season but it hasn’t got the full flavour if you didn’t play in the final. This year I’m hoping I can claim that trophy and be satisfied.
“Last year it was a straightforward decision. Lukasz played throughout the competition and I knew he would play in the final.
“This year I only missed the first game and have played the rest, but it’s the manager’s decision.” He told the Mirror
