Arsenal Eye Swoop For Italian Midfielder As Player Hints At Move
Reports today suggest that Arsenal are plotting a move for experienced Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta after he admitted he’s likely to leave this summer.
Arsene Wenger is expected to bring in a defensive midfielder over the coming weeks and our need for more depth in that area was once again highlighted when Mikel Arteta picked up a calf injury in training this week.
We’ve sat back and let the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Geoffrey Kondogbia join other clubs, Arturo Vidal now looks like he’s off to Bayern Munich while William Carvalho has been ruled out for 3 months through injury.
So options are running out and it looks as though the boss may now be looking for a short-term fix as the Express claim that we’re among the clubs showing a keen interest in signing Thiago Motta.
The 32-year-old is hugely experienced having lifted the Champions League twice during his career as well as a host of other top trophies, most recently with PSG where he’s helped them retain the Ligue 1 title for three consecutive seasons.
However, the midfielder has now admitted it might be time for him to move on in search of a new challenge. He’s quoted as saying in the Express:
“I get the impression that a cycle is coming to an end for me,”
“I have given and received so much.
“It would be more comfortable to stay, but I wouldn’t be honest with myself, nor the club, which I have grown to love.
“It’s not a question of money, but of motivation.”
The newspaper says that the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham are also keen, but we should be in pole position to beat those two if Motta wants to come to the Premier League.
I’d personally rather we had gone all-out for someone like Schneiderlin, Kondogbia or Carvalho – before his injury – but if we can no longer get any of Arsene’s top targets, then I suppose bringing in Motta for a year or two isn’t the worst idea.
He does the dirty work as well as anyone and can also play a bit too. Put it this way, I’d much rather we have the Italian international in the squad than Flamini…..
