Wenger’s injury update on Ramsey, Cech, Cazorla, Koscielny & more
It was another busy day of team and injury news at Arsenal HQ yesterday with Arsene Wenger giving Arsenal.com a full update on the clubs fitness situation so I’ll bring you a round-up today…
Let’s start with the good news and the boss confirmed that Per Mertesacker and Gabriel should be fit and available for selection against Watford on Sunday despite picking up knocks last week.
Mertesacker suffered a head injury against Hull but the German giant didn’t suffer any lasting damage so has been passed fit to play in our FA Cup quarter final tomorrow.
Gabriel, meanwhile, was also forced off at the KC Stadium with a hamstring problem. The defender is set to resume training today and Arsene believes he’ll be available to face the Hornets on Sunday.
We’ll also make a late decision over Laurent Koscielny’s involvement as the French international looks to make his comeback from a calf injury that’s kept him out for the last three games, so we could have a full compliment of centre-backs to choose from.
Francis Coquelin is certain to return to the squad after serving his one-game suspension while Hector Bellerin will also return after being rested on Tuesday night.
However, it wasn’t all positive news as Arsene also confirmed that Aaron Ramsey is expected to be on the sidelines for around four weeks after suffering a thigh injury against Hull in midweek.
Wenger also gave a brief update on Petr Cech, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, saying the trio are all making good progress in their recoveries but won’t make their comebacks before the international break.
The boss told the clubs website on Friday:
on the team news…
From the Hull game we lost Ramsey. Gabriel and Mertesacker came off injured but should be available. Koscielny is not far. Will I risk him or not? There is a little medical risk but I have not made a decision yet. Coquelin is coming back from suspension and Bellerin was not in the squad. He is now available.on if Mertesacker and Gabriel have been training…
Gabriel no, Mertesacker yes. I don’t think they have lost too much fitness. We will see. I will make a decision tomorrow. My gut feeling is that Gabriel will join in tomorrow and be available.on Ramsey…
I don’t believe that [he will be out for the season]. At the moment his clinical signs are quite positive. I would say four weeks.on Laurent Koscielny…
He has to join in normal training tomorrow and then it is for me to [decide whether] take a gamble on a guy that has had one training session with the group or not.on Cech, Wilshere, Cazorla…
They are all progressing nicely, but this week and next week they have no chance.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Gabriel and/or Koscielny are passed fit but I wouldn’t risk then unless they are 100%. They’re both carrying muscle injuries and there is no point pushing them and potentially aggravating the problems.
Mertesacker is available and Calum Chambers can play alongside him at the heart of defence against Watford if needed, but Arsene seems confident that at least Gabriel will be available tomorrow.
