Agent hints at talks as Arsenal are linked with surprise swoop

By on June 9, 2016

The agent of Christian Benteke has been quoted in the Express as hinting that Arsenal have been in contact to discuss a shock move for the Liverpool striker.

Arsene Wenger is in the market for a new front-man  after losing Danny Welbeck for the majority of next season through injury and several names have been touted in the papers in recent weeks.

All the talk over the past few days has been around our pursuit of Jamie Vardy but the Evening Standard claim today that he’s told players in the England camp that he’s set snub us and remain at Leicester City.

That will leave us searching for another striker and it looks like we could be eyeing a shock move for Liverpool misfit Benteke, if you believe what his agent has been saying, anyway.

Unverified reports have linked Arsenal’s name along with the likes of Chelsea to the Belgian international recently and now the strikers agent, Eric Kismet, has hinted that we’ve been in touch to express our interest.

When asked about Arsenal and Chelsea opening talks, Kismet refused to rule it out and said that Benteke has attracted interest from ‘many clubs’ but ruled out a move to Italy and insists no decision over the players future will be taken until after Euro 2016.

Kismet is quoted as saying by the Express.

“Has there been contacts with Chelsea and Arsenal? Many clubs want the player, it’s obvious.

“But he is now only thinking to do well in the European Championship. He wants to win the competition with Belgium.

“We’ll think about his future later.”

“Interest from Italy? There are only rumours, but there was some contacts with Serie A clubs six months ago.

“Now, however, there is nothing. He is currently a player of Liverpool, we will analyse the situation later.”

I’d be shocked if Wenger was interested in Benteke as he’s the type of striker that relies on quality crosses in to the box and that just isn’t our game. Well, we occasionally try to put balls in the box but more often than not we hit the first man!

To me, this sounds like the agent is trying to drum up interest in his client and is using our name to do so. Benteke is going to be hard to sell after the poor season he had with Liverpool so Kismet is doing his best to keep linking him to big clubs.

Arsenal’s proposed deal for Bundesliga attacker in danger

He knows we’re in the market for a striker so it’s easy for him to hint that we’ve been in touch for Benteke in the hope that it will spark interest from other clubs.

Benteke to Arsenal is a non-starter if you ask me, but I suppose funnier things have happened in football so you just never know….
