Arsenal legend confirms £20m striker underwent medical but casts doubt over move

By on June 10, 2016

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has confirmed to talkSPORT that Jamie Vardy underwent a medical with the club last week but suggests the striker is now set to snub his proposed £20m move to the Emirates.

Parlour – who won 3 Premier Leagues and 4 FA Cup’s during his time with Arsenal – was speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show this morning when he made the revelations.

The former midfielder claimed that he was at Arsenal the other day when the clubs cameramen and digital staff arrived at the training ground in preparation for Vardy completing his move.

Parlour revealed that the striker did undergo his medical and everything looked set for the 29-year-old to make a £20m move to Arsenal after the Daily Mail claimed we’d triggered his release clause last Friday and Vardy had agreed terms over a three-year contract.

However, the deal stalled after Leicester made a last ditch attempt to persuade the striker to stay and Vardy flew-out to France with the England squad on Monday morning ahead of Euro 2016 having failed to complete the move.

Parlour now thinks Vardy has had a change of heart and feels the 24-goal striker is set to snub his bog-money switch to the Emirates.

“It looks like it isn’t happening now,” Parlour told talkSPORT.

“I was at the Arsenal the other day and there were big reports flying around, and the club’s cameramen and digital staff had to get down to the training ground.

“So it looked like it was going to happen – there was a medical being done.

“But it seems Vardy thought about it while on England duty, and suddenly there was a U-turn.”

So it looks like those initial reports were accurate and Vardy was on the verge of signing for Arsenal before Leicester came in with an improved contract offer in an attempt to persuade him to remain at the club.

Vardy has indicated that he won’t make any decision over his future until after Euro 2016 but there seems to be a growing feeling that he’s decided to stay at the King Power.

Only time will tell whether that’s true but I actually think there’s still a good chance Vardy will join Arsenal. If he had decided to stay at Leicester, surely he’d have come out and said by now to stop all the speculation? It’s far easier to say your staying than joining a new club.

Plus, Leicester have been strongly linked with Deeney and Berahino today, so why would they be searching for a new striker if Vardy had decided to stay?

Maybe Vardy is still mulling over things. Maybe he’ll end up joining Arsenal. Or maybe he’ll stay at Leicester. Sadly we’ve got weeks of speculation left before we’ll find our for sure….
