Wenger offers update after Gabriel suffers horror injury
Arsene Wenger has offered his initial thoughts after Gabriel was forced off on a stretcher with a serious ankle injury during our win over Man City this evening.
The Brazilian went down in a heap during the final minute of our friendly victory over City in Gothenburg and left the field in tears after several minutes of treatment.
Replays of the incident show Gabriel seemingly catching his studs in the turf and twisting his left knee while competing for a ball and the defender went over while putting his full weight down on his left leg.
My initial thoughts were it could have been an ACL knee injury but the physio used a brace/splint on Gabriel’s lower leg/ankle so it appears that’s the area of concern.
The general consensus on Twitter is that Gabriel has suffered at least a serious ligament injury but he may have a broken ankle, however, but Arsene looks to be playing down the injury.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the boss said that it was at least an ankle sprain and that Gabriel was in a lot of pain, but they hope the injury isn’t as bad as it looked.
He also seemed to suggest that Gabriel may not be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after saying he was ‘likely’ to miss the Liverpool game next week.
Wenger on Gabriel: "It's certainly an ankle sprain." But no details on how serious.
