Confirmed: Key Arsenal trio sign new long-term contract extensions

Arsenal have announced on Arsenal.com that Francis Coquelin, Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny have all signed new long-term contracts with the club.

Koscielny has developed in to one of the best centre-backs in the world since joining Arsenal from Lorient in 2010 and has now made 273 appearances for the club having become a vital part of Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven.

The 31-year-old has attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent times but Kos has now put an end to any speculation over his future after penning a new long-term contract.

Giroud has always divided opinion among fans as he’s not quite world class level but there’s no doubt he’s been an excellent signing since joining from Montpellier as he’s scored 91 goals and provided a further 39 assists in his 206 games so far.

The 30-year-old has fallen behind Alexis Sanchez in Arsene’s pecking order this season but after seeking assurances over his playing time, Giroud has now also signed a new contract to commit himself to the club.

Coquelin has taken his opportunity to become an important part of Arsenal’s squad over the past two years having previously struggled to establish himself since joining the club in 2008.

The 25-year-old has improved dramatically in all areas and has now made 131 appearances for the first team, so it’s also great news to hear he’s penned a new long-term contract.

Wenger told Arsenal.com:

“We are very pleased that three important members of our team have committed to us for the long term. Francis has made tremendous technical strides over the past few years because he’s so focused every day.

“Olivier has big experience in the game now and has become a more and more complete player since joining us. Laurent is of course a key part of our squad and I believe one of the best defenders in the world today. So overall, this is great news for us.”

Obviously it’s excellent news that Koscielny, Giroud and Coquelin have all signed new deals but the clubs focus must now turn to tying down Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil….
