Arsenal boost: Midfielder set for swift injury return
According to the Evening Standard, Mohamed Elneny has suffered no reaction to his calf injury and is expected to be in contention for Arsenal’s clash with Hull City this weekend.
Elneny has been at the African Cup of Nations since the start of January but picked up a calf problem while playing for Egypt over in Gabon.
The midfielder was rushed back to play in Sunday’s final and to be fair there was no sign of the injury as he opened the scoring before Cameroon came storming back to clinch the title with a late 2-1 win.
Understandably, Arsenal fans were concerned that Elneny might aggravate his calf problem by playing in the final but thankfully it looks as though we’ve he came through the game unscathed.
The Evening Standard claim that the 24-year-old suffered no reaction from the weekend and while he’ll still be assessed by Arsenal’s medical team when he returns to training on Wednesday, he’s expected to be given the all-clear.
It means Elneny is in line to make a swift return to action for Arsenal as we prepare to welcome Hull to the Emirates this weekend and his availability has come at the perfect time.
We are currently extremely light on central midfield options with Aaron Ramsey ruled out with a calf injury, Granit Xhaka still suspended and Santi Cazorla nursing a long-term Achilles problem.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been moved in to the middle for the last couple of games and has done very well but Francis Coquelin has been woeful lately so it would be good to have another option in the middle of the park.
Personally, I’d prefer to give Elneny a run out alongside The Ox but it would be a new partnership and I understand it would be a risk given our desperate need to pick up three points this weekend.
