Arsenal target Ligue 1 star with 27-year-old set to leave

By on March 12, 2017

According to the Daily Mail, Kieran Gibbs is expected to leave Arsenal this summer and the club will target Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy as his replacement.

Gibbs has been with Arsenal since joining the club as a teenager back in 2004 and he progressed through the youth system before breaking in to the first team squad in 2008.

However, the full-back has found himself playing second fiddle to Nacho Monreal in recent seasons and he’s managed to make just 3 Premier League starts so far this campaign.

Gibbsy has been used more regularly in the cup competitions but his future at the club is in serious doubt as he’s approaching the final year of his contract and no extension appears to be on the cards.

The Daily Mail claim that Gibbs is unlikely to sign a new deal and will instead end his long association with Arsenal by securing a move away from the club this summer.

At 27, understandably Gibbs needs to be playing regular first team football and it doesn’t look like he’s going to get it at the Emirates any time soon, even though I think he’s deserved more game-time given Monreal’s inconsistent form.

However, if he does depart we’ll need to fill a hole in the squad and the Daily Mail say that Arsenal chiefs are eyeing Monaco star Benjamin Mendy as a replacement for Gibbs.

The 22-year-old has been hugely impressive in Ligue 1 this season and has helped Monaco climb to the top of the table while he’s also tipped to become a full French international having represented his country at U21 level.

Mendy is under contract until 2021 so Monaco are under no pressure to cash-in any time soon so we’ll have to wait and see how open they are to doing a deal if we make our interest official this summer.
