Arsene Wenger offers injury update on Alexis Sanchez
Arsene Wenger has offered an injury update on Alexis Sanchez and says it looks ‘positive’ that the Arsenal star hasn’t suffered ankle ligament damage.
Sanchez picked up an ankle injury during our 3-1 defeat to West Brom last weekend after being on the wrong end of a horror challenge from James McClean shortly before half time.
Arsene revealed after the game that Sanchez’s ankle was in a ‘terrible state’ and he wanted to substitute him at half time but Alexis insisted on carrying on before eventually being taken off in the 70th minute.
Wenger said in the aftermath of the disappointing loss at the Hawthorns that he feared Sanchez had suffered ligament damage but he still allowed the attacker to link-up with the Chile squad on Monday.
Alexis was able to train with his international team mates on Tuesday and Wednesday but he was spotted wearing heavy bandaging on his right ankle.
Reports coming out of Chile suggest that Alexis has been given the all-clear following scans and Wenger says the latest update he’s had is that the injury was just a kick.
The boss is still not 100% sure whether the ligament has been damaged but he says the signs are ‘positive’ that he’s avoided serious injury. When quizzed by beinSport about Sanchez’s injury, Wenger is quoted by the Daily Star as saying:
“I don’t know because he left for Chile. In South America, they have a decisive period for the qualifiers for the World Cup, they have a very important game against Argentina over the weekend. He went there.
“The last news I have is that it was only the kick. I don’t know if his ligament was damaged or not – it was swollen so hard to assess after the game – but it looks positive.”
Sanchez is expected to start for Chile in tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Argentina so let’s pray he comes through the game unscathed as it would be a huge blow if he was ruled out ahead of our clash with Man City next weekend.
