Transfer News: £35m attacker set to join Arsenal on 4-year deal

By on June 26, 2017

According to Sport, Riyad Mahrez has decided not to wait for Barcelona and is ready to join Arsenal in a £35m deal with a four-year contract on the table for the Leicester City attacker.

Mahrez was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal last summer before opting to sign a new deal with Leicester ahead of their maiden voyage in to the Champions League.

The 26-year-old put in some solid displays in Europe but he struggled to replicate the kind of form in the Premier League that saw him score 17 goals to help fire the Foxes to their dramatic title in 2016.

Mahrez is now set to leave the King Power after handing in a transfer request last month and he’s once again been linked with a move to the Emirates as well as a number of other clubs, including Barcelona.

Arsene Wenger fuelled speculation that we could sign the Algerian international after publicly admitted earlier this month that he remains a huge fan of Mahrez and hinted that he may bid for the attacker this summer.

The Sun then reported last week that Mahrez had decided to snub interest from the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in favour of joining Arsenal if he stays in England as he supposedly wants to play under Wenger.

The rumours are now intensifying as Spanish outlet Sport are reporting today that Mahrez has decided not to hold out for a ‘dream’ move to Barcelona and is instead ready to accept a four-year contract from Arsenal.

In addition, the report says that the attacker has a ‘firm’ offer on the table from us and work has already begun on Mahrez making a move to the Emirates that’s expected to cost in the region of £35m.

It remains to be seen how much truth there is behind this report as there is always plenty of speculation flying about these days but the Mahrez rumours are growing by the day.

I’m a big fan of the Leicester star and think he’d be an excellent addition to the squad, especially if we could get him back producing the kind of form that earned him the PFA Player of the Year award in 2016.

The worry for me is that Wenger is lining-up Mahrez up as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil as contract extension talks with the pair continue to drag on.
