Arsenal eyeing swoop for £40m Brazilian star
According to a report in The Sun, Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign £40m-rated Monaco midfielder Fabinho this summer.
Arsene Wenger has been busy strengthening his squad with the £52m signing of striker Alexandre Lacazette swiftly following the arrival of Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer.
However, the boss isn’t done there with a new central midfielder next on the agenda and it appears Monaco star Fabinho has emerged as a potential target.
The Sun cite reports coming from France Football that claim Arsenal have joined the likes of Manchester United in the race to sign the Brazilian international this summer.
United have been strongly linked with Fabinho but with Jose Mourinho concentrating his efforts on signing a striker, The Sun suggest that Wenger is ready to take advantage of their inactivity by swooping for the Monaco man.
Fabinho made his name as a right-back but he starred in a more defensive midfield role last season to help Monaco clinch the Ligue 1 title and it seems his form has caught Wenger’s eye.
Understandably, Monaco are keen to keep hold of the 23-year-old but the newspaper suggests they may be persuaded to cash-in if £40m is put on the table this summer.
I’ve said for some time that I think we still need a defensive minded player to protect the defence – particularly if Wenger is going to revert to 4-2-3-1 again next season – and Fabinho would be an excellent addition.
He was outstanding for Monaco last year and can obviously play at right-back or in the right wing-back role if needed so his versatility will be very useful for Wenger.

Let’s see how things develop but as much as I would love to see us go for Fabinho, I have a feeling Wenger isn’t in any rush to buy a midfielder as his priority will now be resolving the future of key players and signing a wide attacker.
Any move for a central player may come later in the summer….
