The summer transfer window is in full swing so here are a couple of Arsenal updates on Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez…

According to Sky Sports News, Sampdoria have tested Arsenal’s resolve with an offer for Jack Wilshere worth £6m plus a further £1.5m in add-ons.

Wilshere is in the final year of his contract and his future at the club is in serious doubt as he’s yet to agree terms over an extension with some reports suggesting we’ve not even opened talks yet with his agents.

The 25-year-old has been with Arsenal since he was a kid but was sent out on loan to Bournemouth last summer in the hope of rejuvenating his career following several injury-plagued years.

After an encouraging start to life on the south coast, Jack’s campaign was cut short when he fractured his leg in April and now it looks as though Wenger is ready to cut his losses.

The boss has publicly insisted that Wilshere will still be at the club this coming season but the papers say that privately he’s ready to cash-in with an asking price of just £9m being touted around.

It looks like Sampdoria have become the first club to test the waters but I think we’ll see their £6m plus £1.5m offer turned down. Or at least I hope it is.

Wilshere has far too much talent to sell him for such a pittance in today’s market where we see Kyle Walker sold for £50m, so I hope we hold on to him rather than sell him off on the cheap.

Another player who’s future at the club is in doubt is Alexis Sanchez as he’s also in the final year of his contract and we’ve yet to persuade him to sign a new deal.

The club have desperately been trying to find an agreement with his reps with the Evening Standard claiming we’ve offered him a contract worth around £300,000-a-week, but it’s yet to be signed.

Alexis hinted over the weekend that his future could be away from Arsenal due to his desire to play in the Champions League but Wenger has now reiterated that the attacker will not be sold this summer even if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

The boss is quoted as saying today by the Evening Standard:

“The decision has been made and we will stick to that. The decision is not to sell. The main focus for us is to concentrate on the Premier League and the Premier League for me today is more important than the Champions League.

“We rested sometimes players in the group stages of the Champions League for the Premier League so that’s become the biggest importance for us.

“We played 20 years in the Champions League, that’s 17 years before Sanchez arrived and three years with him so he can get us back in there.”

So it seems Wenger is adamant Sanchez is staying and it would be a brave call as it means we’d potentially lose around £50m in lost transfer income if we didn’t cash-in this summer.

There are plenty of contrasting views as to whether we should force him to stay or cash-in but it all comes down to Sanchez’s attitude. If he’s willing to put his head down and work hard to try and get the club back in the Champions League next season then great. But if he makes it clear he’s staying against his will and is going to be a problem in the dressing room, then we’re better off selling.

The only caveat is we MUST sell him abroad as letting him go to Man City or Chelsea would be suicidal.
