[Video] Arsenal fans rage at referee appointment for Tottenham game – here’s why

By on November 14, 2017

Arsenal head in to this weekends North London Derby as the underdogs with the odds at bookmakers such as 10Bet live slightly favouring the visitors, Tottenham Hotspur.

With a tough match ahead it’s no wonder fans have been venting their frustration after the Premier League confirmed Mike Dean has been appointed as the referee for this weekend’s game.

It’s understandable, as Dean is widely considered to be the most controversial referee in the league and he’s known to love being the centre of attention on the pitch.

The 49-year-old loves a red card too, having brandished five last season alone – more than any other ref in the Premier League – while he dishes out more penalties than any other official too.

That could spell bad news for us as we have already conceded two penalties this season and we’ve got Petr Cech in goal. Our No.1 has failed to save any of his last 13 spot kicks and has only guessed the right direction on three occasions, so if Dean awards Spurs a penalty on Saturday, it’s almost certainly going to lead to a goal.

But the reason most Arsenal fans are fuming over Dean’s appointment is he’s been brandished a closet Tottenham fan for years. Not only was he caught on video ‘celebrating’ a Spurs goal against Arsenal but he also ‘celebrated’ when they scored against Aston Villa.

Check it out here:

However, as undeniable as the video above is, Dean’s record officiating Arsenal games isn’t all that bad. According to @7amkickoff, Dean has been in charge of 62 Arsenal games, of which we’ve won 26 and lost 16. The number of yellow/red cards given out to us and our opponents is similar and in line with other clubs.

Dean has been in charge of two NLD’s at the Emirates, the 5-2 win and a draw, while he’s taken charge of 4 at White Hart Lane with a record of W1, D2, L1. So overall, his record isn’t something we should be crying about too much.

A concerning stat is he’s only ever given us 3 penalties in 62 games, while our opponents have been given double that figure. He’s also never awarded a Spurs player a red card while their opponents have been given 3.

Obviously there are a lot of variables that affect these stats which we can’t account for but as much as I HATE Dean, I don’t want him to be used an excuse if we lose this weekend.

Unless he rules out a clear Arsenal goal, gives Spurs a dodgy penalty and sends off Granit Xhaka for a fair tackle……when it comes to Mike Dean, none of those incidents would be a surprise.
