Arsenal confident of signing Bundesliga star, formal transfer talks due to begin
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are set to open formal talks with Leon Goretzka about a free transfer move and are increasingly confident of signing the Schalke midfielder.
Goretzka is one of the most exciting young players in European football and has been a key player for Schalke in recent years after joining the club from Bochum in 2013.
The 22-year-old is also a regular with Germany having scored 6 goals in 12 games for his country but his future at Schalke is in serious doubt as his contract is set to expire in June and he’s refusing to sign an extension.
Arsenal are among a whole host of clubs being linked and the Daily Mail claim we’ll open formal talks with the player in January about signing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The newspaper says Arsene Wenger is desperate to sign Goretzka as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the impending departures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil while Jack Wilshere could also be leaving the club next summer.
However, obviously we aren’t the only club after Goretzka as the likes of Man City and Juventus are also in the running but the Daily Mail claims Arsenal are increasingly confident of luring him to the Emirates.
Goretzka is believed to be aware of our interest and it seems Arsenal chiefs are hoping to pull-off a second free transfer raid on Schalke having snapped up Sead Kolasinac ahead of a number of other top clubs.
Goretzka is a central midfielder who can play as a box-to-box or in a more advanced role so his versatility will be a useful asset and he’s a hugely talented player.
It’s not going to be easy to fend off all the competition but I think the German international would be a superb addition to the squad if we could lure him to north London this coming summer.
