Arsene Wenger reveals fresh injury blow for Arsenal after Southampton game

Arsene Wenger has confirmed a fresh injury blow with Aaron Ramsey picking up a hamstring problem during this afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Southampton.
After being rested for our Europa League win over BATE in midweek, Ramsey was recalled to start alongside Granit Xhaka in the centre of midfield at St Mary’s today.
The Welsh international completed the full ninety minutes as Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score a late equaliser after poor defending allowed the hosts to open the scoring early on.
However, Ramsey was seen holding his thigh with five minutes to go and limped through the closing stages of the match as we’d already made our three permitted substitutes.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Wenger confirmed Ramsey has suffered yet another hamstring injury. He told the Evening Standard:
“Aaron Ramsey couldn’t play at the end. He had a hamstring problem.”
We’ll have to wait and see how serious the injury is but even a minor hamstring strain will keep him out for around three weeks so it looks like he could be out until after Christmas.
Rambo has been virtually ever-present in the Premier League in recent weeks so this latest injury comes as a real blow ahead of what’s going to be a busy festive period.
The 26-year-old has a history of hamstring problems so this latest setback really shouldn’t come as a surprise but at least it will open the door for Jack Wilshere to stake his claim for a first team place.
I hope we see Wilshere start in central midfield for our trip to West Ham on Wednesday night – which would be his first league start for Arsenal since May 2016.
