[Video] Mike Dean apologies to Wenger after penalty error cost Arsenal 2 points
Footage has emerged on social media showing Mike Dean apologising to Arsene Wenger shortly after wrongly awarding West Brom a penalty during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw yesterday.
We were below our best at the Hawthorns but looked to have secured a hard fought 1-0 victory when Alexis Sanchez’s deflected free-kick gave us the lead in the 83rd minute.
West Brom had offered very little threat in front of goal but they were gifted the chance to snatch a point when Mike Dean awarded them a penalty during the closing minutes of the game.
Kieran Gibbs kicked the ball against Calum Chambers’ arm – which was in a natural position in front of his body – from about a yard away and the referee couldn’t wait to point to the spot.
Jay Rodriguez made no mistake from the resulting penalty to make it 1-1 in the 89th minute and there was precious little time left for us to find a winner.
Understandably, Wenger was furious with the decision and after the boss had remonstrated with the fourth official, Dean went over to have a word in the Frenchman’s ear.
I thought he was warning Arsene to calm down or face being shown to the stands but footage has now emerged that shows Dean was in fact apologising to Wenger for his incorrect penalty decision.
You can see in the video that the fourth official has a word in Dean’s ear before he speaks to Wenger so no doubt he was informing the referee of his mistake which prompted Dean to apologise to Wenger for costing his team two valuable points.
Check out the video here:
I'm not a great lip reader but this looks like Mike Dean saying sorry to Arsene Wenger numerous times 60 seconds after WBA scored their pen. Shocking really! Another game decided by a bad refereeing decision, video ref will be a revelation when it eventually happpens. pic.twitter.com/XrA2geccKd

It was a horrendous call, and that’s not a bitter Arsenal fans point of view as every pundit and former referee agrees that it should never have been a penalty.
Fair play to Dean for admitting his mistake but it doesn’t get our two points back! Plus, we should have had a penalty in stoppage time when Danny Welbeck was fouled and once again Dean made the wrong call.
I can’t wait for VAR to be introduced here in England on a full-time basis!
