Wenger speaks out on reports Arsenal are plotting swoop for 21-goal forward

Arsene Wenger has played down reports suggesting Arsenal are plotting a January swoop for Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Sky Sports reported yesterday that Wenger had made the Gabon international his prime target as the boss prepares for life without Alexis Sanchez.
Our Chilean super-star is being strongly tipped to join Manchester City this month after failing to push through a move in the summer and his exit would leave a huge void needing to be filled.
Aubameyang would obviously be an excellent signing for Arsenal as he’s proven himself to be one of the most prolific forward’s in Europe over the past few years.
He’s scored 21 goals in just 23 appearances this season while he netted 40 goals last season so he’d certainly bring an added threat in front of goal if we managed to lure him to the Emirates.
However, when quizzed about the reported interest at his press conference today, Wenger insisted that a move for Aubameyang isn’t on the cards this month.
The boss is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“No, that is not a possibility [Aubameyang joining Arsenal in January].”
I wouldn’t expect Wenger to say anything else as he normally keeps his cards close to his chest but I said yesterday that I didn’t think there was much foundation to these Aubameyang rumours so I think the boss is telling the truth here.
The 28-year-old is a central striker so he can’t be classed as a like-for-like replacement for Sanchez and I personally don’t think Wenger will buy another big-money hitman after splashing out £50m on Alexandre Lacazette in the summer.
