Arsenal in battle to sign French star as Wenger looks to replace Cech

According to the Mirror, Arsenal face stiff competition from Napoli over a deal to sign Toulouse keeper Alban Lafont this summer as we look to sign a replacement for Petr Cech.

Arsene Wenger is under pressure to leave his position as manager this summer but it looks like he’s still pressing ahead with his transfer plans and a new goalkeeper is on the agenda.

Cech finally secured his 200th clean sheet by saving a penalty against Watford yesterday but the 35-year-old’s best days are behind him and we need to sign a replacement this summer.

The latest Arsenal transfer rumours have linked with a number of names in recent weeks but the Mirror claim Arsenal chiefs have identified Toulouse stopper Lafont as the ideal replacement for Cech.

The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the most highly-rated young keepers in Europe and he’s been touted as the man to replace Hugo Lloris as the French national team keeper in the future.

Lafont has already represented his country at every youth level from U16 to U21 and the teenager has made almost 100 first team appearances for Toulouse despite his tender age.

He certainly has a bright future ahead of him, however, Arsenal could miss out on his signature as L’Equipe – via the Mirror – claim that Napoli are now leading the chase.

The Serie A giants are expected to lose Pepe Reina this summer and the report says Napoli are now ready to lure Lafont to Italy with the promise of regular first team football.

It’s unclear whether Arsenal will be able to match that offer as we could also sign a more experienced keeper as well because David Ospina is also expected to leave this summer.

It would be a shame to miss out on Lafont as he looks like he’s going to be a top quality keeper but we’ll have to wait and see what the youngster decides to do at the end of the season.
