Sky Sports: Arsenal chief identifies 56-year-old as the man to replace Arsene Wenger

According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat wants Liverpool’s assistant manager Zeljko Buvac to replace Arsene Wenger as manager this summer.

There has been mountains of speculation in the media about who will take over from Wenger after he announced two weeks ago that he’ll be stepping down at the end of the season.

With the likes of Luis Enrique, Carlo Ancelotti, Max Allegri and Mikel Arteta among the bookmakers favourites, shock reports out of Bosnia earlier this week claimed that Buvac was poised to take over at Arsenal.

The 56-year-old has been Jurgen Klopp’s assistant for the past 17 years and has earned a reputation as being ‘The Brain’ behind the charismatic German coach during his time with the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

Buvac was basically put on gardening leave last weekend with Liverpool citing ‘personal reasons’ as the cause for the surprise decision for him to step back from first team duties just days before their Champions League semi-final.

However, the reports coming out of him homeland claimed the reason Buvac had been axed at Anfield was because he had agreed to take over the reigns at Arsenal.

Most laughed off the report as mere speculation but there could be more to it as Sky Sports News claim that Mislintat does indeed want Buvac to replace Wenger this summer.

The news outlet says Mislintat wants Buvac to be the head coach in a new three-man team along with himself as the head of recruitment and Raul Sanllehi as head of football relations.

Mislintat and Buvac know each other well from their time together at Dortmund so a lot of this report would make sense as Buvac is known to be an outstanding coach so Sven must see something in him.

However, a good coach doesn’t always make for a good manager and Buvac is known to have an introverted personality and is someone that doesn’t like being in the limelight so it remains to be seen whether he has what it takes to be in charge of a huge club like Arsenal.

Personally, I think it’s too much of a risk for Arsenal to give Buvac his first go at management and feel we should be going for a more established name. Max Allegri is the obvious choice but I can’t see him coming unless we have Champions League football to offer him.

Let’s hope we can put off a minor miracle in Madrid tonight….
