Sky Sports: Arsenal tried to sign £39m South American over the weekend
According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal made a late attempt to sign Fabinho over the weekend before the Brazilian midfielder completed a £39m move to Liverpool.
Arsenal are gearing-up for an important summer after missing out on Champions League qualification and strengthening our options in the middle of the park is believed to be a top priority.
Santi Cazorla has left the club while Jack Wilshere could follow the Spaniard out the exit door as his contract expires next month and he’s yet to agree terms over a new deal.
We’ve lacked a proper defensive midfielder in recent seasons as I don’t think Granit Xhaka qualifies but it looks like the club are hoping to rectify the situation this summer.
Sky Sports claim Arsenal made a last gasp attempt to sign Fabinho over the weekend but the South American midfielder had already decided he wanted to join Liverpool.
Uni Emery is a huge fan of the 24-year-old having tried to sign him during his time at PSG and it seems our new head coach was hoping to lure the Brazilian to the Emirates.
However, we were too late as Fabinho was unveiled as a Liverpool player last night after completing his medical on Monday with Sky Sports claiming Liverpool have paid Monaco £39.3m with a further £4m in potential add ons.
I’m absolutely gutted that we weren’t able to sign him as Fabinho has developed into a top class defensive midfielder over the past two seasons having been converted from right-back.
He would have been a superb signing and solved a problem we’ve had for some time but at least it’s good to see the club are actively trying to sign a defensive midfielder.
We may have missed out on Fabinho but let’s hope Emery/Mislintat have players of similar quality lined-up as we desperately need to add some world class talent to our squad this summer.
