[Video] Done deal: Arsenal confirm signing of Bernd Leno in £19.3m deal

By on June 19, 2018

Arsenal have confirmed on Twitter this evening that goalkeeper Bernd Leno has joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in deal reportedly worth £19.3m.

Unai Emery has been on the look out for a new number one this summer as Petr Cech’s best days are behind him and David Ospina is expected to leave after failing to hold down a regular place.

Leno emerged as our first choice target and the transfer has moved swiftly with the Express reporting that the 26-year-old has been in London today undergoing his medical ahead of his move to the Emirates.

The newspaper says Arsenal have agreed a fee worth £19.3m with Leverkusen and Leno has signed a five-year contract after completing his move to the club this evening.

Arsenal have confirmed the news on Twitter with a short video featuring Leno in his new Arsenal training gear while Emery has told Arsenal.com that he’s pleased to have signed a ‘high quality’ goalkeeper.

Our boss told the official website:

“We are very pleased that Bernd Leno will be joining us. Bernd is a goalkeeper of high quality and experience. He has been a top performer and regular number one goalkeeper with Leverkusen in the Bundesliga for the past seven years. We are all excited that Bernd has chosen Arsenal Football Club and look forward to start working with him in pre-season.”

Leno has been one of the most consistent keepers in the Bundesliga in recent years and was unlucky to miss out on a place in Joachim Low’s Germany squad for the World Cup finals.

The 26-year-old becomes our second signing of the summer following the arrival of Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus and I think he’s going to be an excellent addition if he continues to progress in north London.

Leno isn’t going to be the last new arrival as we’re also reportedly close to signing midfielder Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria while a deal for centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos is expected to be announced next month.
