From Spain: Arsenal closing-in on surprise deal to sign 29-year-old international star

By on July 21, 2018

According to Marca via the Mirror, Arsenal are in advanced negotiations over a shock deal to sign Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer despite already bringing in Bernd Leno this summer.

Unai Emery splashed out around £19m to sign the German stopper from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month and he’s expected to be our No.1 ahead of the new campaign with Petr Cech demoted to the bench and David Ospina set to leave.

However, surprise reports emerged last week suggesting Cech could be heading back to Chelsea if Thibaut Courtois completes a proposed move to Real Madrid and it seems Emery is now back on the market for another keeper.

And it looks like the boss has found his target as Marca, via the Mirror, claim that Arsenal are in advanced negotiations over a deal to sign Monchengladbach star Sommer.

The Spanish publication says Barcelona are also showing a keen interest in the Swiss international as they look for a replacement for Jasper Cillessen amid speculation he’s ready to move in search of regular football.

However, Marca claims that Barca could be too late as they expect Sommer to have completed his move to the Emirates before Cillessen’s future at the Nou Camp is resolved.

No further details such as potential transfer fee or when this proposed deal could take place are disclosed in the report but Marca appear confident that Arsenal are on the verge of signing Sommer.

I must admit this news has come as a surprise but if we are set to sign the 29-year-old then it must mean Cech and Ospina are on the way out of the Emirates this summer.

Sommer was excellent for Switzerland at the World Cup and has been a solid stopper throughout his career so he should apply some pressure to Leno for the first team jersey but I don’t see him as a top level keeper.
