Bid expected after Emery instructs Arsenal board to target £20m-rated international
According to the Daily Mail, Unai Emery has instructed the Arsenal board to try and sign left-back Kieran Tierney from Celtic this summer in a deal that would cost around £20m.
Emery is going to continue to overhaul the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger with the boss expected to bring in a number of new signings ahead of the new season following a disappointing first campaign in charge.
Defence was once again our Achilles heel last season as we conceded a ridiculous 70 goals across all competitions – 51 in the Premier League – so we simply have to tighten up at the back if we want to be competing for major trophies again.
I hope Arsenal are on the look out for a new right-back to support Hector Bellerin while a commanding centre-back is desperately needed but it looks like Emery is also in the market for a new left-back.
The Daily Mail claim Emery has told the Arsenal board that Kieran Tierney should be a prime target as he feels the Celtic full-back has what it takes to help improve our shambolic defence.
The newspaper suggests that Arsenal are now expected to launch a bid to sign Tierney over the coming days but Celtic won’t let him go on the cheap as they’ll demand around £20m for his signature.
Tierney has shown no sign of agitating for a move away from his boyhood club and he’s under contract until 2023 so Arsenal are going to have to table an offer Celtic can’t refuse if we want to get a deal agreed.
It could also be difficult to lure the 22-year-old away from his beloved Celtic Park but playing in the Premier League should tempt Tierney as it will help him in his battle with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson for the left-back spot with Scotland.
I think the youngster would be an excellent addition to the squad as Tierney is a quality player who has the potential to improve further over the coming years and he has the tenacity that we’ve lacked at times in defence.
However, Emery only has a tight budget to work from this summer so I’d expect Nacho Monreal will probably have to be sold in order to make room for Tierney if we can get a deal agreed with Celtic.
