[Image] My 4-2-3-1 Arsenal line-up to face Liege: Aubameyang out, key duo return
Arsenal continue their Europa League campaign when we take on Standard Liege at the Emirates on Thursday evening. This is the line-up I’d like Unai Emery to select…
Goalkeeper: Martinez
Martinez hasn’t put a foot wrong in either of his two appearances so far this campaign so he should be given another chance to impress tomorrow night with Leno rested.
Defence: Bellerin, Chambers, Holding, Tierney
Emery confirmed at his press conference today that Tierney and Bellerin are both set to feature against Liege. The Arsenal boss didn’t say if they would both start but I hope they do as this is a great opportunity for them to get some competitive minutes under their belts.
I thought Holding was unlucky not to keep his place against Man Utd after an excellent performance in the League Cup last week but he should be recalled tomorrow. No doubt Emery will give Mustafi a start but I’d like to see Chambers lining-up alongside Holding to see how they play together.
Sokratis, Luiz and Kolsinac will all be rested after starting against United while Maitland-Niles may have to settle for a place on the bench.
Midfield: Torreira, Willock
Arsenal should make changes in midfield with Xhaka and Guendouzi given a breather so hopefully we should see Torreira playing in his proper position in defensive midfield. The experiment of playing him further forward hasn’t worked so let’s get him back doing what he does best and that’s protecting the defence.
Willock should be recalled and I think he could forge an excellent partnership alongside Torreira in the middle of the park.
Attack: Ozil, Ceballos, Nelson, Martinelli
Hopefully we see Ceballos recalled to the starting eleven while Ozil should come back in to the side after not travelling to Old Trafford on Monday. Many criticised Emery for that decision and the boss clearly isn’t a fan but I think Ozil is still reluctant to travel too far outside of London away from his family following his security issues over the summer. But we’re at home so Ozil should be involved.
I wouldn’t be against Ceballos playing in a midfield three with Ozil out wide but I’d like to see Mesut in his best position and think we can get him going again in the No.10 role if he has Torreira and Willock behind him. Ceballos has played on the wing for Spain to good effect while Nelson should start on the opposite flank.
Obviously Aubameyang should be rested as we need to wrap him in cotton wool while Lacazette remains out so Martinelli can get another chance to impress up front for Arsenal after scoring twice in the Carabao Cup last week.
Saka was arguably our best player against Man Utd and is making himself a regular so he should be rested tomorrow ahead of the Bournemouth game on Sunday while Pepe should also make way – although I would have him on the bench.
This is the starting eleven I hope we’ll see from Arsenal:
