Arsenal players want Unai Emery sacked [Telegraph]
The Arsenal players feel Unai Emery should be sacked after losing faith in his ability to turn our season around following a disastrous start to the new campaign, according to the Telegraph via The Sun.
We’ve been woeful virtually all season and needed a stoppage time equaliser from Alexandre Lacazette to salvage a 2-2 draw with Southampton at the Emirates on Saturday after the visitors squandered a number of chances to put the game to bed.
It extended our winless run in the Premier League to five games and we’ve now taken just three points from games against Sheffield United, Crystal Palace [H], Wolves [H], Leicester and Southampton [H], which is a disgraceful return.
Following our worst start in 20 years, Arsenal now languishing eighth in the table and eight points off the top four so the vast majority of fans have turned on Emery and want the Spaniard sacked as soon as possible.
It seems the players now feel the same as the The Sun are citing a report from the Telegraph that claims the bulk of the Arsenal squad have lost faith in Emery and believe he needs to be replaced in order for the club to move forward.
The newspaper says players are confused by Emery’s selections, tactics and instructions, and feel the club have lost their identity under the former Sevilla boss so it’s safe to say he’s totally lost the dressing room.
Reports suggest that the board are split over whether to sack Emery. Chairman Sir Chips Keswick reportedly tried to quit on Saturday as he believes it’s time for a change of manager. However, the Express says head of football Raul Sanllehi is keen to give Emery more time to turn things around.
On paper, Arsenal have some winnable games coming up against Frankfurt, Norwich, Brighton and West Ham so Emery could buy himself some time with a run of positive results over the next couple of weeks.
However, our previous run of games also looked good on paper and we’ve been totally abject so I’m not confident Emery is going to turn things around any time soon, therefore, a change in manager is needed asap.
The Sun says Freddie Ljungberg could be installed as interim boss if Emery goes with Mikel Arteta, Julian Nagelsmann, Brendan Rodgers, Massimiliano Allegri and Patrick Vieira among the candidates under consideration.
Mauricio Pochettino’s name is also being thrown around but I think it’s virtually impossible for him to take over after leaving Tottenham just days ago so I think we can forget about that happening.
It’s going to be an interesting time ahead but I really hope Arsenal act like a big club and sack Emery quickly as it’s clear he’s totally out of his depth and now that he’s lost the dressing room, we’re only delaying the inevitable.
